European regions and air routes’ dismissal risk.
There is an ongoing debate on the impact of air transport infrastructure and accessibility on regional economic growth. What researchers have found is that air transportation can, at least in areas with latent potential, foster economic development. As a result, when airlines decide to open/close a route, the economic implications at the regional level may be definitely relevant. This is especially true in the last decades, when major airlines have sharply consolidated cutting their less profitable hubs and routes. The aim of this paper is to investigate the factors affecting the probability that a specific air route survives over time. By looking at the predicted probabilities, we analyse European regions on the basis of their respective expected connectivity gains/losses. Finally, we intend to see whether some common trends can be identified among regions characterized by similar remoteness dimensions.
