Learner Paths and Trajectories in MOOCs.

Using original individual data recorded during the first session of a recent MOOC, we investigate learners’ paths and trajectories. We show that the heterogeneity in learners’ behaviour is strong, even among learners who studied a comparable proportion of the course. At an individual level, the number of different days of connection also varies a lot, even for people completing all the steps. We gather evidence of ‘binge learning’, with learners completing all steps in few days. We also find that a large proportion of learners do not follow the prescribed path by moving forward or backward. This proportion increases with the number of steps completed. These features question MOOCs organisation and suggest moving from a model with a uniform ‘fit-them-all’ path to models proposing paths and trajectories adapted to more heterogeneous tastes.
